Navigating Life's Twists and Turns:
A Journey Beyond Good and Bad

PUBLISHED IN NOVEMBER 2023

I recently had an experience that reminded me of a fundamental truth: events are neither inherently good nor bad; it is our perception and interpretation that shape our feelings about them. Allow me to share a story from a recent adventure that perfectly illustrates this point.
Last Thursday, I embarked on a road trip with a dear friend, aiming for a relaxing cruise. Little did we know, the universe had a different plan for us. About an hour into our journey, my friend's car decided it was time for a break—unfortunately not the scenic rest stop we had in mind.

Here's where the plot thickens: my friend is deaf, making the situation a bit more challenging. However, armed with fluency in sign language, I stepped in to call for roadside assistance. Crisis averted, right? Not quite.

The plan shifted gears as we coordinated with our husbands to bring my car, enabling us to continue our trip. After a bit of a logistical dance, we finally rendezvoused with our additional travel companion to catch a train for the next leg of our journey—a seemingly straightforward 2.5-hour ride.

But life, as we know, loves a good curveball. The train decided to join the breakdown party, tacking on an extra 45 minutes to our already lengthy adventure. As we tried to update our accommodation on the delayed arrival, hunger gnawed at us, having not eaten all day.

Finally reaching our lodging, we were met with a surprise—a bustling pub in the heart of the city, not the quiet serviced hotel we envisioned. The kitchen had already closed, adding another layer to our day of unexpected twists.

Now, you might be wondering: was it a good day or a bad day? The easy path would be to dwell on the mishaps and label it a disaster. But our perspective tells a different story.

Gratitude became the theme of our journey. We were thankful that the car trouble happened relatively close to home, allowing for quick assistance and minimal disruption. Thankful for deciding to embark on our adventure the night before, ensuring we wouldn't miss the cruise despite the hiccups.

And most touching of all, my deaf friend expressed her heartfelt thanks, tears in her eyes, for my ability to interpret and coordinate assistance.

Our accommodations, though not what we expected, turned out to be a delightful surprise. The lively pub introduced us to a myriad of friendly faces in a city we were exploring on our own. And just around the corner, a late-night restaurant saved us from the day's final challenge—hunger.

The lesson learned? Life is a series of events, and it's our interpretation that shapes our experience. Sometimes, what initially seems like a disaster can lead to unexpected joys and connections. So, next time life throws you a curveball, consider embracing the unknown and finding the silver lining—you might just uncover a delightful adventure.
